tips to smarten
up your home
If you’re building a new home, consider designs that include the efficient use of solar energy for hot water and electricity in the home. Incorporate shading structures or eaves. It’s all about designing to keep the sun out in summer and letting it in during winter.
Insulate the walls, floors and ceilings of the home with the most suitable material and one that has the highest resistance to heat flow – this measure is known as the R-value. The higher the R-value, the better the insulation. A well-insulated home can be up to 10ºC cooler in summer and 5ºC warmer in winter.
Seal around external doors and windows. One of the most costeffective and easiest ways to save money and energy during winter is to seal out draughts. Draughts are typically found around windows and doors throughout all areas of your home. Choose the right window glazing for your climate. A well designed home with careful window placement can enhance your cooling, heating and lighting.
