he Blue Mountains, located just west of Sydney in NSW, covers one million hectares and is home to vast tracts of ancient eucalypt forests. This precious wilderness has been classed as a World Heritage area since 2000, and is one of Australia’s most beautiful natural wonders. Owner of Blue Eco Homes and 2016 GreenSmart Professional of the Year, Joe Mercieca, calls the Blue Mountains home and is passionate about protecting and preserving the fragile beauty of its flora, fauna and ecosystems. His sustainable, environmentally friendly homes are
designed to step lightly and respectfully on their surrounding landscape, both during construction and into the future. ‘We’ve been in the Blue Mountains for about 25 years and we’ve always been pretty passionate about sustainability and the environment,’ explains Joe, who began his building career as a site manager for a major construction company before setting out on his own in 2003, building homes in and around the Blue Mountains region. When the global financial crisis hit several years later, Joe decided to reinvent the business and specialise in ecologically sensitive housing more suited to the region.
