IDEAS ANYONE CAN USE
In-home energy monitoring systems are an easy way to take control over how much electricity your home uses. By seeing how much is being consumed and when, you can make immediate adjustments to your daily usage by cutting back on areas of wastage such as standby power; or running energyhungry appliances at different times.
generally have to learn how to operate them to maximise comfort and minimise ongoing expenditure on energy and water. To this end, all clients are given a homeowners manual that explains how the house works and how to ‘drive’ it. ‘The final part of an eco home is understanding when to open and close windows and blinds; how to keep heat in and get heat out,’ explains Jeremy. ‘If the homeowners have a good understanding of the principles behind how their house works, it makes a huge difference to how it will perform for them over the long term.’ An energy monitoring system installed in the main living room also gives occupants greater control over their energy use. ‘They can see how much energy is being used at any one time; this allows them to make adjustments and change the way they use electricity to meet their needs.’ The home’s energy requirements are minimised thanks to the inclusion of compact fluorescent and LED lights and an electric-boosted solar hot water system, which Jeremy says can slash water heating bills by 75 per cent. Every design detail and material selection in the ‘Pacific’ was based on how it will benefit both the end-user and the environment, and in many ways,
this contributes to the home’s depth of character: the floorboards in the loft, for example, are reclaimed from a local squash court, and recycled or locallymilled timbers bring rustic warmth to the bathroom, kitchen and living areas as well as the outside deck. The healthy beachside air remains unsullied by hidden internal pollutants, thanks to the use of VOC-free paints throughout, and low-VOC carpeting, joinery products, glues and sealants.
