Proud supplier to the 2016 HIA GreenSmart Home of the Year
‘We are a dedicated design and construct building company that only builds eco homes of our own design,’ Jeremy explains. ‘Some clients we help right from the start of the process, beginning with site selection and purchase, which is generally the first step to designing and building a sustainable house.’ This is the first year they have entered the HIA GreenSmart awards, and Jeremy says they never imagined walking away with one award, let alone two. ‘It was fantastic, we didn’t even expect to win spec home really, so to get home of the year, we nearly fell off our chairs. It’s amazing to get the recognition for it.’ The winning house, based on EcoEssence’s ‘Pacific’ design series, is located at Kingscliff, just south of Tweed Heads on the New South Wales/Queensland border, and distils
the company’s entire ethos into one beautiful, sustainable and highly energyefficient package. ‘We built the house as a speculative project for ourselves and used it as a bit of a display home for around two months after we finished it. The main driver for us was to help [prospective clients] open up their minds, to see just how far we can take the sustainability concept.’ The company’s brief to itself was to design a home ‘that breathes, is a little quirky, feels cosy and warm, and looks like beach houses from decades past… while maintaining the cost at a level that the masses can afford’. This was achieved by combining costeffective, commonly-used materials with a range of solar passive features that augment both thermal performance and air quality.
